Teeth Shift after Tooth Loss

What are tooth implants?

Dental implants are a modern alternative to standard restorative dentistry that has been around for a long time. During the process, high-quality titanium “tooth roots” are placed into the jawbone. Through a process called “osseointegration,” the titanium material joins with the jawbone and locks the implant in place. This makes a support for replacement teeth that is almost as good as natural teeth. Professor Pe-Ingvar Branemark, a Swedish scientist and orthopedic surgeon, was the first person to study osseointegration. He did this more than thirty years ago. After more than 30 years of clinical and scientific study, dental implants are now much better than they used to be. The result is a tooth replacement system that looks, feels, and works like real teeth. It is comfortable and almost permanent.

Why are tooth implants a good idea?

Because your new teeth are securely attached, they won’t move around like they do with traditional dentures, partials, and bridges. Your ability to bite and chew will be back to normal. You’ll be able to eat the things you like again. You’ll feel good about what you say and how you look. Also important, dental implants don’t require the good teeth next to them to be ground down like traditional bridges and partials do.

Who can get implants for their teeth?

Dental implants can be used by anyone whose jawbone is fully grown and who has lost teeth or will lose teeth. The biggest problem is the amount of bone that can be used.

Does the process hurt?

With current anesthesia, you probably won’t feel any pain when an implant is put in. Depending on how long your procedure took, you may feel soreness afterward, which is generally treated with over the counter pain medicine.
