Laser Treatment for Fever BlistersFever Blister/Cold Sore prevention and elimination

Fever Blisters / Cold Sores are extremely embarrassing as they appear on your lips. They are caused by viruses. They stay for about two weeks and are horrible for self-esteem. Dr. Nugent can direct laser energy at the lesions and deactivate the virus. Laser therapy can help sufferers of fever blisters in two ways. One, when you feel the onset of a fever blister (itching and burning on your lips) call our office immediately. Dr. Nugent can use the laser to deactivate the virus before it turns into a fever blister saving you the embarrassment of a fever blister on your mouth. Secondly, if you already have a fever blister on your lips Dr. Nugent can use the laser to stop the virus and start the healing process. No more walking around for two weeks with a fever blister.

Bacterial Laser Reduction

Laser Bacterial Reduction. We are continually learning in order to advance the quality of patient care in our office. As such, we have recently added Laser Therapy to your routine cleaning care to help fight periodontal disease.

Gum disease (periodontal disease) affects roughly 80% of adults and is an increasing epidemic in America.  The understanding of gum disease has increased greatly over the last few years. We now know that gum disease is a BACTERIAL INFECTION in the pockets around teeth. Therefore, we are now treating gum disease not only by the removal of mechanical irritants and diseased tissue (your normal cleaning), but are also addressing the underlying bacterial infection that causes periodontal disease. With that thought in mind, we recommend that all of our patients have their teeth decontaminated with LASER THERAPY at the beginning of cleaning appointments for three major reasons.

A. To kill gum disease bacteria and stop infections before they cause physical destruction (loss of bone) or loss of attachment (gum tissue pulling away from the teeth).

B. To prevent the spread of infections in one area of your mouth to other areas. The laser decontamination helps prevent isolated gum infections from spreading to healthy areas.

C.  To reduce or eliminate bacteria entering the blood stream.  Irritated and infected gum tissue bleeds easily. This allows bacteria present in one’s mouth to enter the bloodstream. Research shows that oral bacteria are linked to a number of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, low birth weight babies, etc.  Needless to say, anything that we can do to reduce or eliminate bacteria is a positive for our patients.

The laser decontamination process is quick (less than five minutes) and is painless. Dr. Nugent and his hygienists highly recommend that you take advantage of this service as part of your routine cleaning.

  Tissue removal / re-contouring

In the course of routine dentistry or even cosmetic dentistry the gum tissue may be in the way. Dr. Nugent can easily use his laser to painlessly remove the tissue. In conjunction with, sometimes the gum tissue covers the teeth and creates poor cosmetic proportions and the appearance of short, fat teeth. Simply removing the excess gum tissue will allow for more cosmetic proportions.
