Dental Stem Cells collection and preservation from baby and wisdom teeth.
When Dr. Nugent became a Father in 2006 he found himself reading more and more journal and research articles that were about pediatric dentistry. He read journal articles that talked about obtaining and using stem cells in teeth.
Collecting stem cells from baby teeth and wisdom teeth is an amazing way to get stem cells. The stem cells from teeth are complimentary to the stem cells from umbilical cord blood.
There are two subtypes of adult stem cells. Hematopoeitic stem cells form blood cells. They are typically found in bone marrow and umbilical cord blood. Mesenchymal stem cells form connective tissues such as bone, tendons, muscles, fat, and nerves as well as liver and pancreatic cells. Mesenchymal stem cells are typically found in bone marrow or the dental pulp in teeth.
Dr. Nugent has both his daughter’s cord blood preserved and will also collect baby teeth from his girls. This will insure that both Hematopoeitic and Mesenchymal stem cells are preserved.
