Toothache Treatment

If your child is experiencing a toothache, it is important to have an evaluation performed at our practice as soon as possible. Please call ahead so we can be sure to set aside the most convenient appointment time. While a toothache can have any number of causes, one common feature of all toothaches is that they can lead to more serious dental issues if not addressed quickly. Toothache treatment begins with an analysis of the tooth pain and its cause. Dr. Nugent will then recommend a course of action to help restore your child’s smile and relieve their pain.

If you child has a toothache, warm salt water can be used to rinse the affected area. Also, over the counter Orajel can be used to help reduce pain. Parents can also use dental floss to check for food and debris between the teeth. If swelling occurs, this can be reduced by placing a cold compress on your child’s face. Acetaminophen is an effective pain medication that can be used before your child’s dental visit.

Bitten Lip or Tongue

If your child has bitten his or her lip or tongue, clean the area gently with a cloth and apply cold compresses or ice to reduce swelling. If the bleeding does not stop, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
