How Implant Dentures Work

Dental Implant Dentures:

Dental implant dentures have dramatically changed dental care. In fact the mandibular implant supported denture is the first choice standard of care for edentulous (lacking teeth) patients.

“How do Dental Implant Dentures Work?”

Let’s first take a look at why old fashioned dentures don’t work. Old fashioned dentures merely rest on the jawbones. There is no attachment whatsoever of the dentures. The dentures move, rub, dislodge, cut and fall off the jawbone. These problems increase as the gum tissue and bone disappear because there are no teeth in the jaws. To further add insult to injury, the old fashioned  dentures actually speed up the disappearance of the gum tissue and bone by compressing and rubbing the tissue. It is a vicious cycle. The old fashioned dentures rub on the gum tissue causing tissue loss. Now the dentures fit even worse and are able to move more causing increased tissue loss. Patients try to compensate for the poor fit by using extreme amounts of denture adhesives.

Dental Implants: The Revolutionary Technology that Changed Dentistry

Dental implants are very simple to understand. Dental implants are merely “natural tooth root substitutes”. The great breakthrough was discovering that bone can and will grow around titanium. The dental implants are simply placed into the jawbone where the bone will grow around the implant essentially locking the implant into place. Now the implant is secured rock solid in the jawbone. From there, Dr. Nugent can make the implant look like a tooth or utilize the implant to serve as an anchor point for an implant denture.

In the case of implant dentures, a gold locator abutment “male end” is screwed into the implant. The denture is made to have a “female end” that holds a nylon housing that “snaps” onto the abutment. An awesome feature of the nylon housings is that they can be adjusted to different retention levels. Dental implant dentures are stable and secure.  Patients throw away their denture adhesives. Furthermore. the forces of chewing get transmitted down to the implants and stimulate the bone. This stimulation prevents the gum tissue and bone loss. Dental implants are the only treatment options that will preserve bone levels.
