Pasadena Texas Family Dentist Michael Nugent give dental tips.
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is an infection of the periodontal (gum) tissue often caused by plaque. Left untreated, gingivitis can lead to more serious gum problems. Signs include red, swollen and bleeding gum tissue.
What is plaque?
Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that grows on the teeth and gum tissue. When plaque is allowed to build up it causes irritation to the gum tissue and teeth. Plaque leads to gingivitis and periodontal disease. Furthermore, the bacterial film causes tooth decay.
What is tooth sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity is the tooth pain one feels after hot or cold foods/liquids or cold air hits the teeth. Tooth sensitivity can be caused by gum recession that exposes the tooth root to the temperature stimuli. The root services has millions of tubes and the stimuli can be transmitted to the nerve. Over the counter sensitivity toothpastes plug these tubes to prevent the stimuli traveling to the nerve.
What is tooth decay?
Tooth decay is when a cavity eats away your tooth. The bacteria in your mouth produce acid as waste and this acid eats away the tooth structure. The bacteria colonize on the teeth in a sticky film called plaque. The bacteria are literally right on the tooth so the acid waste from the bacteria come into contact with the tooth. The acid eats away the enamel. The enamel is the hard outter layer of the tooth.
What is teeth discoloration?
Teeth are porous. So anything that would stain a white shirt will stain teeth. Teeth usually darken and get more yellow with age. The bulk of the discoloration is internal. Very little stain is on the external surface. Dr. Nugent can make special teeth bleaching trays that remove the internal stain. This rejuvenates the smiles and gives a more youthful appearance.
