Why do some Dentists not recommend dental implants?

Unfortunately some dentists have not kept current in their dental knowledge and still do the same dentistry they learned way back when they were in dental school. For the older dentists, it is easier to just to the old fashioned dentistry. Dr. Nugent’s dental class was one of the first classes at Houston to get formal training in dental implants from oral surgeons, periodontist and prosthodontists. After dental school Dr. Nugent has focused on dental implants and keeps current with the advancements in dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium rods that are inserted into the bone to act like a natural tooth root. An abutment connects the implant to the cosmetic porcelain crown. The patient’s new teeth look, feel and function just like natural teeth

Dr. Nugent offers patients a combination of leading-edge technology and a comfortable, pain-free experience. Implants are titanium posts that are placed in the bone to replace the root portion of a missing natural tooth. After allowing time for the jawbone to bond to the surface of the implant (osseointegration), a post is attached to the implant and a crown or other restoration is placed on the post. This ability to add a tooth where it is needed has been a game changer in Dentistry.

Implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth, and offer a tremendous improvement in comfort, speech, eating, and convenience over conventional partial and full dentures. Implants are often recommended in place of a bridge to replace single missing teeth, as they are not necessary to drill down the adjacent natural teeth to make crowns. Advantages of implants over bridges include not needing to drill down the adjacent natural teeth, making cleaning easier, and not decaying.

Dental Implants are the treatment of choice for replacing missing teeth. They are the most advance and longest lasting tooth replacement option. Why choose dental implants over other treatment options?

Dental Implants are the best treatment of choice for replacing missing teeth when:

•    A patient cannot tolerate the bulky plastic dentures.
•    A patient has lost teeth and wants to avoid removable dentures.
•    A patient needs a tooth replaced but doesn’t want to damage the supporting healthy teeth.
•    A patient wants to have the most advanced dental solution that is the closest to natural teeth.

Implant and ToothHow long does an Implant last?

Dental implants if taken care of can last indefinitely. Dental implants must be brushed and flossed just like other teeth. Implants cannot get cavities or root canals.

How much does an implant cost as compared to other forms of dentistry?

The cost of a dental implant is comparable to a bridge. For a bridge to work teeth must be ground down. The long term survival of bridges is only 10 to 15 years. On bridges cavities are a major cause for failure of the bridge. Furthermore, around 15% of bridge teeth need root canals. The most common reason for single tooth loss is root canal failure or fracture of root canal teeth. Dental implants are far superior to bridges.

Do Implants require any special care?

Implants and accompanying replacement teeth should be brushed and flossed just like natural teeth. Dental implants cannot get decay but are still subject to gum disease in the same way natural teeth are.

What will happen without treatment?

When teeth are lost the bone starts to deteriorate.  When the bone shrinks, problems with a loss of bone support can lead to increased pain, mobility, and problems with adjacent teeth. When enough bone is lost, the possibility of numbness to the lower lip or even fracture of the jaw increases. Furthermore, the tongue also enlarges to accommodate the missing space. Teeth are vital for proper chewing. Missing teeth severely diminish chewing forces and ones diet shifts to softer foods. If the bone deteriorates to greatly, more implants or more extensive procedures will be necessary then if the missing teeth were replaced early.  When teeth are lost it causes the other teeth to move and shift causing multiple problems. Preventing more problems is always better and less expensive then letting the problem get bigger. Dental implants prevent teeth from shifting.

Dental implants are a true passion of Dr. Nugent. You owe it to yourself to see how dental implants can change your life!

Dental Implants can also be used for people who are already in dentures. The ability to “LOCK” a denture securely in place is an amazing advantage. Dental Implant Dentures give patients the confidence and ability to eat the foods they want.
