How do you care for baby teeth?

As soon as the first tooth erupts, baby teeth (primary teeth) may be cleaned with a clean, wet wash cloth or wet gauze. The gums should also be gently cleaned. If a toothbrush is used, it should be an appropriate size. Once your child is one year old you can incorporate a very small amount of fluoride toothpaste on the toothbrush. The amount of toothpaste should be the size of one piece of rice. Once your child will not swallow and can spit, a pea sized amount of toothpaste should be used. Furthermore, once baby teeth touch you should start to floss your child’s teeth.

What is the most frequent site of decay on baby teeth?

With inappropriate or prolonged use of the baby bottle, decay occurs on the upper front teeth (incisors). Children should NEVER be put to bed with a sippy cup of juice or milk. The next most common area of decay is the back primary molars. These teeth are the furthermost back in the mouth.

Why are dental sealants awesome for children?

Dental sealants are applied by your hygienist or Dr. Nugent as a protective coatings for the chewing surface of permanent molars. The sealants literally “seal” off the small fissures and crevices. Thus, the bacteria cannot get into and cause decay in the fissures. The sealants protect the teeth from decay.
